Île Madame
Ile Madame is a small island sitting in the centre of the Charente estuary. The island hosts many treasures, a rich history and an abundant natural environment made up of a diverse population of fish, shellfish, plants and other marine species.
The fort is one of its main attractions. The main fortification was built in the 18th century. Since 2007, it has been owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral (Coastal protection Agency), an organisation to protect France’s outstanding natural areas and coastal heritage.
All year round, numerous activities are offered on the site such as the Egg Hunt during Easter or the night visits during Summer.
Our team welcomes you every day for guided visits from June to September depending on the tides. Be aware that you can only have access to the island (and back) few hours a day when the tides are low. Make sure you get off the island before the next high tide or you might have to enjoy another plate of oysters!
